Trump Critiques CBS’s New Ownership
During a Monday appearance on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” former President Donald Trump expressed that he believes the network’s new ownership isn’t much different from its previous administration. This statement came in the wake of Leslie Stahl’s interview with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), which sparked controversy when Trump referred to Greene as a traitor amidst their dispute.
Paramount, CBS’s parent company, merged with Skydance Media back in August, appointing David Ellison as the new CEO. Ellison’s first significant move was bringing Bari Weiss on board to oversee CBS News, someone known for advocating against what she sees as liberal bias in traditional media. Many thought Trump might view Weiss’s leadership more favorably, but it seems he’s not convinced.
“My main issue with the show wasn’t even the low IQ traitors. It’s that Paramount’s new control of ’60 Minutes’ would allow programs like this to air. They’re not any better than the previous ownership that paid me millions for misleading reports about me, your favorite president! I’d say ’60 Minutes’ has actually worsened since they acquired it!” Trump stated.
Trump, who had his own “60 Minutes” interview last month, also took to social media, indicating that Stahl owes him an apology for his 2020 conversation with her. He claimed, “Well, it could be worse. P.S. I demand a full apology from Leslie Stahl and ’60 Minutes’ for her misleading statements regarding Hunter’s laptop—it’s too late for that now!”
Stahl had famously dismissed Trump’s claims during their earlier interview about Joe Biden’s involvement with Hunter Biden’s laptop scandal, saying “He’s not,” in response to the accusations.
In addition to his grievances against CBS, Trump criticized Greene following her appearance on the Sunday episode, where she announced her plans to resign from Congress next month.
Trump commented, “Marjorie is neither America First nor MAGA. No one changes their views so quickly; her new opinions are those of someone who isn’t thinking straight.” He also reflected on his interview with Stahl, recalling her firm denial of his claims that the laptop was tied to Russian misinformation, which later turned out to be incorrect.
On the same day, Ellison initiated an all-cash tender offer to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery for $30 per share, marking a bold takeover attempt. Paramount mentioned in a press release that they believe regulatory clarity supports their merger plans.
“Paramount feels confident that this proposition is pro-competitive and beneficial for consumers, ultimately fostering creative talent and enhancing consumer choice,” the statement explained.
Additionally, Trump has alleged that CBS engaged in election interference regarding the upcoming 2024 election and has filed a $20 billion lawsuit against the network for its editing of an interview with Vice President Kamala Harris last year. That particular dispute was settled in July, with Trump receiving $16 million to cover various costs.
The agreement paves the way for the FCC to approve the anticipated merger of Paramount Global with Skydance Media, allowing Ellison to assume leadership of the new entity.
As of now, Paramount has not provided a comment on Trump’s latest criticisms.
