Jets Defense Struggles in Latest Loss
The Jets’ defense had a tough outing on Sunday, suffering a 34-10 defeat to the Dolphins.
They allowed a staggering 239 rushing yards throughout the game. To add to their troubles, the team recorded 10 missed tackles and failed to secure a takeaway for the 12th time this season. In the early stages, the Dolphins appeared to have the upper hand, quickly establishing a 21-0 lead.
This situation isn’t ideal for defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
If there’s not a dramatic improvement by the end of the last four games, concerns about Wilks’ future might intensify. On Monday, head coach Aaron Glenn shared his thoughts on Wilks’ performance.
“You know what? I’ve been in that position before, and I was fortunate to have a good coach,” Glenn noted. “It’s about having faith in him just as much as he believes in Wilks. At season’s end, I’ll assess the coaching staff and have further discussions to figure out ways to improve,” he said.
It’s worth mentioning that Wilks isn’t solely to blame for this performance, but accountability is likely coming for a defense that’s yet to leave a significant mark on games.
Interestingly, the Jets haven’t recorded a single interception this season, a rarity not seen by any team through their first 13 games in NFL history. That’s pretty much the sum of their defensive achievements this year.
The ongoing issues that plagued them at the season’s start emerged yet again on Sunday.
“This is a team effort, from players to coaches,” Glenn remarked. “I can’t just point to one individual and say it’s all their fault; it’s a shared responsibility. I consider how I’m conveying my expectations across offense, defense, and special teams.”
Numerous comparisons have been drawn between the Jets under Glenn and the Lions’ turnaround under Dan Campbell.
During Campbell’s inaugural year in Detroit, he made the bold move of dismissing offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn and promoting Ben Johnson. I wonder, will Glenn make a similar decision in his first year?
Wide receiver Garrett Wilson is set to return from injured reserve this week, though Glenn hasn’t clarified his plans just yet.
“We’ll have discussions with the doctor and with Garrett,” Glenn said. “After those conversations, we’ll make decisions.” Wilson has been out for four straight games due to a knee injury.
This incident occurred after he had previously missed time due to the same issue earlier in the season.
