Japan Releases Initial Megaquake Alert After 7.5 Magnitude Quake

Magnitude 7.5 Earthquake Hits Northern Japan

A strong earthquake, measuring 7.5, struck northern Japan late Monday, resulting in injuries for at least 34 individuals. This incident prompted Japan’s Meteorological Agency to issue a significant earthquake warning for the first time.

The quake occurred around 11:15 PM (14:15 Japan time) off the coast of Aomori, approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) away. This area is just north of the region where a devastating magnitude 9.0 quake triggered a tsunami in 2011, claiming around 20,000 lives and severely damaging the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Initially, a widespread tsunami warning was put in place following the earthquake, though it has since been retracted. Reports indicated that the Meteorological Agency issued an unprecedented high-level warning for a potential massive earthquake, predicting a magnitude of 8 or higher. This warning covered an extensive area stretching 1,300 miles from Chiba to Hokkaido and suggested dire consequences, including the potential death of 199,000 people, the destruction of 220,000 buildings, and a staggering economic loss of $198 billion.

Although no evacuation routes were provided for residents, officials recommended that people review their escape plans, secure their furniture, and prepare emergency supplies. The advisory is anticipated to remain in effect for a week.

Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi noted that around 480 residents from the Hachinohe base were evacuated, and 18 military helicopters were deployed to assess the situation. Additionally, about 200 passengers found themselves stranded at New Chitose Airport, according to reports.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi addressed the media, stating that the government had assembled a task force to quickly evaluate the damage incurred. “We are doing everything we can to prioritize people’s safety,” she expressed, urging residents to stay tuned for updates from local authorities and remain vigilant.

“Please be ready to evacuate immediately if you sense shaking,” the prime minister added.

Satoshi Harada from the Meteorological Agency’s Earthquake and Volcano Division highlighted the need for preparedness in the face of natural disasters, emphasizing the importance of practicing for such eventualities.
