Governor Hochul's confusing reaction to NY Representative Elise Stefanik's criticism on affordability

Discrepancies Over New York’s Affordability

Well, things could certainly be worse!

This week, Governor Kathy Hochul responded to Rep. Elise Stefanik’s assertion that New York is “the least expensive state in the nation” with some ambiguity.

The governor’s office emphasized that according to a ranking from U.S. News & World Report, New York actually ranks 45th in terms of affordability—not exactly “at the bottom,” as claimed by Republicans in a recent Politico article.

Stefanik criticized Hochul in Politico’s Playbook, suggesting that her leadership has earned her the title of the worst governor in America, claiming she has made New York the most unaffordable state, burdened by high taxes and utility bills.

In a strange turn, Hochul’s attempt to counter this criticism was by referencing a U.S. News & World Report list that somehow categorized New York as the sixth cheapest state, which seems contradictory.

Hochul’s campaign spokesman, Ryan Radulowacki, noted, “As usual, Elise Stefanik is embracing negativity, this time to distract from her ‘defining vote’ on Trump’s cost-raising policies, decisions to cut police budgets, and her support for tariffs that hurt small businesses and burden hardworking New Yorkers.”

During a different news conference, Hochul was asked to identify her proudest achievement as governor. She highlighted the administration’s work to bolster the economy and reduce crime rates following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I think the whole system is demonstrating success in stabilizing the post-pandemic landscape, and I’m really proud of that,” she remarked.

In its assessment, U.S. News & World Report identified several affordability subcategories where New York appears to be struggling.

The state ranked 49th in opportunity, 34th in infrastructure, and 24th regarding crime and corrections.

On the plus side, New York did place in the top 10 for fiscal stability, natural environment, and health care.

For perspective, California was named the most affordable state, while New Jersey, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Washington all outperformed New York in the affordability rankings.
