Controversy Surrounding Notre Dame’s College Football Playoff Elimination
This situation might serve as a wake-up call for Notre Dame, suggesting that perhaps America isn’t quite as fond of them as they think.
Notre Dame’s athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, has faced significant backlash, reaching beyond South Bend, especially following the Fighting Irish’s exit from the College Football Playoff. Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark has now added his voice to the critics.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Bevacqua reiterated his concerns about the ACC, claiming it had engaged in a social media campaign aimed at promoting Miami’s College Football Playoff hopes while overlooking Notre Dame.
“What really surprised and disappointed us, in my opinion, was how the ACC Conference actually appeared to attack our football program on social media,” Bevacqua remarked.
He also questioned the CFP selection process and indicated that the relationship between the Fighting Irish and the ACC soured after their playoff disqualification, with rising tensions over the last couple of weeks.
Yormark certainly noticed the situation. Speaking at an IAF event in Las Vegas, he expressed his displeasure regarding Bevacqua’s handling of the matter.
“I’ll be a little candid about it. I didn’t appreciate Notre Dame’s reaction. I think Pete’s response was terrible. Attacking Jim Phillips, who supported Notre Dame during the pandemic, was a big mistake. Everything was clear, and Hunter Juracek was upfront too,” Yormark stated.
He highlighted how the head-to-head matchups would play a crucial role as Notre Dame and Miami vie for playoff positions. “BYU lost, and it was the head-to-head result that played into that decision. I think Bevacqua’s response is completely over the top. If he were here, I’d say it directly to him,” he added.
On another note, if my Miami Hurricanes get knocked out, I might just find myself rooting for Texas Tech; the Big 12 is making quite a favorable impression on me.
