Rumors Surrounding Marcus Freeman Intensify
The college football season has wrapped up for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who, after missing out on the College Football Playoff and a bowl game, are now facing speculation about their head coach, Marcus Freeman.
With the coaching carousel recently spinning to a stop, including Lane Kiffin moving to LSU and John Sumrall taking over at Florida, Freeman is now linked to potential NFL openings. Specifically, his name has popped up regarding the New York Giants head coach position, particularly as the team prepares for decisions following their final game of the season.
Freeman’s name emerged during last season too, especially when the Chicago Bears were on the hunt for a head coach before ultimately hiring Ben Johnson. Now, it seems eyes are once again on his potential shift to the professional level.
Urban Meyer, a former coach who has experienced success and challenges in both college and the NFL, weighed in on Freeman’s situation. “I think he’s better off staying in college,” Meyer remarked during a segment on FOX Sports. He noted that, as a college head coach, Freeman has more control over outcomes, unlike in the NFL where other powerful figures influence much of what happens.
Meyer continued, highlighting that his own tolerance for losing may resonate with Freeman’s mindset. “He’s going to win at Notre Dame,” he observed, suggesting that the pressures of the NFL could be a tough adjustment.
In light of all this, Freeman himself has commented on the chatter about his potential move to the NFL. He advised his players to focus on what matters and not be swayed by outside distractions. “I say, ‘Don’t let other people’s noise become your noise,'” he explained, emphasizing the importance of staying present and grateful for current opportunities.
Freeman expressed admiration for the Giants, recognizing their storied history and the significance of the position, but noted that he values the connections and achievements with his current team. “We’re in this position because of the people,” he stated, highlighting the collaborative effort behind their success.
Currently, Mike Kafka is serving as the interim head coach for the Giants. Yet, with a roster full of potential, the team could see a considerable boost with the right leadership. Freeman is certainly a name to watch as the NFL landscape shifts this offseason.
