Jalen Hurts Struggling on the Field
Right now, Jalen Hurts isn’t having the best time on the field.
The Eagles’ quarterback has completed under 60% of his passes in four out of his last five games, and he turned the ball over five times during Monday night’s defeat against the Chargers. Things are getting pretty rough, and Coach Nick Sirianni is pondering whether a change at quarterback might be necessary.
In a chat on 94 WIP, Sirianni expressed his disbelief at the thought of benching Hurts: “I think that’s ridiculous. Every time I step on that field with Jalen Hurts at quarterback, I know we have a chance to win the game. It’s been proven. We’ve won a lot of football games.”
Despite Hurts ranking 20th in total QBR with a score of 51.9, the Eagles don’t seem to have a backup quarterback who’s ready to step into the starting role. Hurts is just ahead of Spencer Rattler (49.8), Trevor Lawrence (47.1), and Jaden Daniels (45.9).
If the Eagles decided to go in a different direction, Tanner McKee and Sam Howell are the backups waiting in the wings.
The questions surrounding Hurts are significant, especially given the controversies the Eagles have encountered this season. Star receiver AJ Brown has spoken out about Hurts’ performance, previously labeling the locker room as a “mess.”
DeSean Jackson, a former teammate and Eagles legend, hinted that it might not just be about football. “As you can imagine, there’s something else going on,” Jackson remarked. “It’s not all about football, it’s not all about X’s and O’s. I’ve had situations with quarterbacks where things just didn’t click, and when that happens, it becomes pretty obvious.”
The Eagles, currently sitting at 8-5, have lost three games in a row, loosening their hold on the division. The Cowboys are on their heels at 6-6-1 and looking strong. Philadelphia has two games left against the Raiders, along with matchups against the Bills and Commanders, as they aim for the NFC East title for the third time in four seasons.
