Ukrainian President Ready for Elections Amid Criticism
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has stated that his country is prepared to conduct elections, following remarks from former President Donald Trump. Trump had accused Zelenskiy of using the ongoing war as a reason to delay electoral processes.
In an interview on Monday, Trump expressed that he perceived this as a crucial moment for Ukraine to hold elections. The country has been under martial law for years, which has led to the cancellation of all elections after Russia’s invasion in 2022.
With Zelenskiy’s term set to expire in May 2024, Trump suggested that the Ukrainian leader was prolonging the conflict to retain power and called for timely presidential elections.
“They’re using war to avoid elections, but I believe the Ukrainian people will, and should, have their say,” Trump remarked.
“Mr. Zelensky might likely win,” he continued. “However, no one knows for sure. It’s been a long time since they’ve had elections, and while they talk about democracy, it feels more like it’s slipping away.”
On Tuesday, Zelenskiy responded, stating he was “ready for elections.” He expressed that both he and his European counterparts have sought support from the U.S. to ensure electoral security, announcing that “within the next 60 to 90 days, Ukraine will be ready for elections.”
“I am urging lawmakers to draft relevant legislation to facilitate this during wartime,” he added, noting that such advancements would depend on a potential ceasefire with Russia.
Zelenskiy indicated that security assurances might involve military support, air defense mechanisms, and sanctions against Russia.
Meanwhile, Trump emphasized that Ukraine should be open to compromises regarding the proposed ceasefire terms drafted by the U.S.
“Relations with Russia aren’t straightforward, as they have considerable leverage. Their size lends them strength,” Trump noted.
“I commend the Ukrainian people and their military for their bravery and achievements,” he added. “Ultimately, size tends to prevail.”
Trump remarked that Zelenskiy hadn’t reviewed the latest peace proposal, lamenting that “many lives are at stake.” He stressed that it’s vital for Zelenskiy to take the time to read the document, as feedback from his team was positive.
However, Zelenskiy pushed back on Trump’s assertions, claiming he had looked over various versions of the plan.
“We are actively refining our approach and are in constant communication with both the negotiating team and our partners in Europe and the U.S.,” he explained.
Zelenskiy made these statements after Ukraine’s leadership discarded Trump’s peace proposal, reiterating that they would not concede any territory to Russia as part of a peace settlement.
“According to our laws, international regulations, and moral standards, we have no right to surrender any land,” Zelenskiy stated on Monday. “That’s the essence of our fight.”
