Brooklyn Republican Rep. Inna Vernikov, a known gun owner, faces no consequences for bringing a firearm to a pro-Palestinian rally at a college, despite criticism from progressive city council members.
The city council’s Committee on Standards and Ethics decided on Tuesday not to pursue formal disciplinary measures against Vernikov, who serves the 48th District that includes areas like Brighton Beach and Sheepshead Bay.
Interestingly, the committee issued a strong statement denouncing a conservative council member from the pro-Israel side, who was spotted with a 9mm pistol while attending a protest at Brooklyn College earlier this year.
Chair of the committee, Democratic Rep. Sandra Ng, noted that Vernikov had yet to issue an apology that would satisfy most committee members. Other members, including progressives Crystal Hudson and Diana Ayala, echoed this sentiment.
“It’s troubling that Councilman Vernikov hasn’t taken responsibility for her actions,” Hudson pointed out, with Ayala agreeing.
If the commission were to reconsider further disciplinary actions, it could lead to either a suspension or dismissal for Vernikov.
A spokesperson for City Council President Adrian Adams voiced concern, stating that bringing firearms to public gatherings isn’t appropriate and elected officials should set a good example for New Yorkers.
In response, Vernikov claimed she was merely exercising her Second Amendment rights.
She expressed, “Bringing weapons to public gatherings, especially when dealing with groups like the Global Intifada, is not just appropriate but necessary,” pointing to current societal issues and urging law-abiding citizens to stand by their rights.
Vernikov had been arrested back in October 2023 for possessing a firearm at Brooklyn College, but those charges were eventually dropped when it was discovered that the gun’s spring was removed, making it inoperable.
