Fraudulent Obamacare Subsidies a 'Scheme That Has Been Ongoing for a While'

Rep. Scott Fitzgerald Discusses Obamacare Subsidy Fraud on FBN

On Wednesday, Rep. Scott Fitzgerald (R-Wis.) appeared on “Mornings with Maria” on FBN to discuss the Government Accountability Office’s (GAO) findings regarding fraud in Obamacare subsidies, as he prepares to lead a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on the matter.

The Wisconsin Republican described the fraud as a “scam,” indicating that it isn’t necessarily a new occurrence.

During the show, host Maria Bartiromo asked Fitzgerald about his expectations regarding any potential renewal of these subsidies. He responded, saying, “Yes, Maria, before we can even think about fixing Obamacare. What concerns me is this GAO report that shows the president was right. This isn’t just about fraud and abuse; it’s been ongoing for some time. Many members are beginning to request an extension, which is going to be challenging now that this GAO report is public. People are starting to grasp what’s really happening.”

Bartiromo then inquired, “So you don’t foresee any changes? These subsidies are set to expire at year-end.”

Fitzgerald replied, “Yes, there are around five plans available. We’ll be meeting this morning at 9 a.m. to hear from the speakers regarding what they’re offering. But I have to be honest—it feels like there’s a significant disconnect between the plans being promoted and the positions taken by the members.”

Bartiromo followed up, “So you’re saying there’s no way to secure a majority?”

Fitzgerald expressed some optimism, noting, “Well, I’m hopeful. The White House seems to be coalescing around some ideas. Not specifically HSAs or HRAs, but health reimbursement accounts, as mentioned in the president’s speech last night, reflecting how people are rethinking their health. The Wall Street Journal has been discussing this for about a month. I previously mentioned that if Republicans were to embrace ideas, they’d have answers quickly, so I’m optimistic that the Senate dynamics will shift significantly.”
