University of Michigan Fires Head Football Coach Sherrone Moore
According to reports, the University of Michigan has terminated head football coach Sherrone Moore.
Moore, who is 39, took charge of the team in 2024 following Jim Harbaugh’s departure to coach the Los Angeles Chargers. In his brief time as head coach, he led the Wolverines to a 16-8 record.
Players were called to an unexpected team meeting where they learned of Moore’s firing. Michigan’s athletic director, Warde Manuel, announced that Moore was let go for cause after an investigation revealed “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
“Sherrone Moore has been terminated for cause, effective immediately,” Manuel stated. “The University’s investigation uncovered credible evidence that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct is a clear violation of University policy, and UM will not tolerate any such conduct.”
Biff Poggi, who stepped in as interim coach during Moore’s earlier suspension this year, will take over on an interim basis again.
Manuel informed team staff that the inquiry into Moore’s conduct has been ongoing since mid-November.
Currently ranked No. 18, the Wolverines have had a rollercoaster season as they try to recruit new talent, notably true freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood. Following a midseason upheaval, the prospects of breaking into the playoff picture dimmed dramatically, especially after a 27-9 defeat to archrival Ohio State, which dashed any postseason hopes.
Moore began his career at Michigan in 2018 as a tight ends coach, becoming associate offensive coordinator in 2021. He was elevated to the role of offensive coordinator in 2023 during a year overshadowed by a sign-stealing scandal that challenged the program. He served as head coach while Harbaugh was suspended for three games related to the same scandal.
In Moore’s inaugural season, the Wolverines finished with an 8-5 record, notably winning against Ohio State in Columbus and securing a bowl victory over Alabama.
The following year, Moore’s Wolverines ended with a 9-3 record. He faced a two-game suspension in 2025 due to his involvement in the sign-stealing controversy.
Throughout both seasons at the helm, the Wolverines did not qualify for the College Football Playoff.
