Shannon Sharpe likens himself to Sherrone Moore

Shannon Sharpe shared his thoughts on the intense pressures facing Sherone Moore, the recently fired University of Michigan coach. Moore was dismissed on Wednesday following revelations of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, and he is currently in custody facing assault charges.

During a recent episode of the podcast “Nightcap,” Sharpe, who settled a $50 million sexual assault lawsuit in July, spoke with evident emotion about Moore’s circumstances. “I experienced something quite similar six months back, so unless you’ve been through that storm, it’s hard to grasp,” Sharpe noted. His departure from ESPN coincided with the lawsuit news.

“It’s as if everything you’ve toiled for your entire life is just disintegrating before your eyes. It’s a unique experience for a few, and that’s perhaps the toughest part,” he added.

In light of the situation, Michigan University officially ended Moore’s employment following claims of an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” backed by what they described as “reliable evidence.”

The identities of the involved staff members have yet to be disclosed.

Moore, 39, was detained by Pittsfield police and held overnight on suspicion of assault. According to a media statement regarding the arrest, it was indicated that “this incident does not seem random and there is no ongoing threat to the community.”

Adding a personal element, it’s worth noting that Moore is a father to three daughters, and his wife, Kelly, recently gave birth to another child.

“This sort of conduct clearly breaches university policy, and the University of Michigan has a strict no-tolerance stance toward such behavior,” Athletic Director Warde Manuel mentioned in a statement.

Moore had signed a five-year contract last year, boasting a base salary of $5.5 million. Interestingly, since he was terminated for cause, the university won’t be obligated to pay out the remaining contract years.

During his stint, Moore led the Wolverines to a 17-8 record over two seasons and added another win during the 2023 regular season. This past season, the team concluded with a 9-3 record and is set to challenge the Texas Longhorns in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on December 31st.
