New federal task force begins in New York to address crime

New York Launches Task Force to Combat Transnational Organized Crime

Federal officials have introduced a groundbreaking task force in New York aimed at addressing transnational organized crime. During a press conference on Wednesday, Ricky Patel, the Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New York, announced the creation of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF).

“This task force is unique. The HSTF represents a comprehensive approach to protect our homeland from the evolving threats of transnational organized crime,” Patel stated. The mission focuses on identifying and prosecuting criminal organizations involved in a range of criminal activities both in the U.S. and globally.

Patel described various crimes that fall under this initiative, including murder, human trafficking, money laundering, kidnapping, extortion, drug trafficking, and arms trafficking.

At the same time, U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton addressed the press, mentioning that while crime rates are declining in New York, they still remain concerning—especially in vulnerable communities. He credited law enforcement for the reductions seen so far and discussed various accomplishments over the past year. This includes prosecution efforts related to murders, shootings, stabbings, sex trafficking, and other criminal activities tied to groups like Torren de Aragua.

Clayton also highlighted a recent drug sweep in Washington Square Park, where 18 arrests were made, calling it a successful example of a collaborative public safety approach.

Christopher Reier, Assistant Director of the FBI New York, pointed out that the HSTF was established to address the increasing threats posed by transnational criminal groups and foreign terrorist organizations.

Raia underscored the task force’s authority and tools, which have been enhanced by the recent designation of violent drug cartels and gangs as foreign terrorist organizations. He emphasized that they plan to systematically dismantle these networks.

Raia also shared that the task force has already shown significant progress, referencing collaborative efforts that led to indictments and arrests related to drug trafficking involving large amounts of cocaine and fentanyl. Such activities have severely impacted communities and even endangered innocent lives during public confrontations.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York noted that the main focus of the task force will be on investigating criminal organizations identified as foreign terrorist entities. They highlighted a unique, unified approach that ensures effective collaboration across various law enforcement levels.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, over 3,200 individuals connected to foreign terrorism, drug trafficking, and gangs have been arrested through the efforts of the HSTF throughout the country.
