Sam Ehlinger from the Broncos declines invitation to return to the Colts

Denver Broncos quarterback Sam Ehlinger declined to take up an opportunity to return to the Indianapolis Colts, who are in need of a replacement for Daniel Jones after his season-ending Achilles tendon injury.

Ehlinger, who played his first four NFL seasons with the Colts before joining the Broncos’ practice squad, mentioned that his agent had productive discussions with Indianapolis and that he took time to weigh his options.

In a statement, he shared, “We’re really happy here and enjoying the organization, the path we’re on, and what we’re building. I want to be a part of that.”

He also expressed his fondness for Indianapolis, stating, “I’ve been in Indianapolis for four years, and I love everyone over there. Obviously, it’s a difficult situation.”

At 27, Ehlinger was drafted by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He played in eight games during his time with Indianapolis before moving to the Broncos.

Following his decision, the Colts opted to sign 44-year-old Philip Rivers to their practice squad. Ehlinger indicated to a local outlet that he would likely be playing alongside Rivers.

If you’re wondering about Rivers, he anticipates starting a game against the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday. Having last played in 2020, he described the opportunity to return as exciting, saying, “Something excited me. It’s kind of one of those deals where the door opens, and you either walk in there and see if you can do it or you get the hell out of there.” He acknowledged the risks involved but emphasized that the only way to know is to give it a try.

The Seahawks are set to host the Colts on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
