Giants want Jaxson Dart to understand when to step out of bounds

Giants Rookie Quarterback Jackson Dart Navigates Sideline Decisions

Finding the right moment for Giants rookie quarterback Jackson Dart to slide or scramble during a run has become a balancing act. It seems the key now is understanding how to navigate the sideline.

In a recent game, Dart was tackled by Christian Ellis from the Patriots, which led to a personal foul after Theo Johnson intervened. This penalty turned what could have been a straightforward third down into a tougher field position scenario before a punt.

Offensive coordinator Tim Kelly noted, “He needs to stay out of harm’s way and avoid exposing himself.” He acknowledged that the hit was fair but emphasized that the team’s reaction to defend Dart, while commendable, ended up costing them due to the penalty. Kelly added that if Dart had managed to step out of bounds earlier, they wouldn’t have faced such a situation.

Kelly also commended Dart’s ability to make smart decisions while protecting the ball. In fact, Dart has a notably low interception rate of 1.3 percent. However, there’s still plenty to think about while on the move.

“When should you head out of bounds?” Kelly mused. “It’s clearer in hindsight. If he’d just gotten out six inches sooner, there wouldn’t be any flags. The situation would be much different.” It’s those little adjustments that can lead to significant changes in the game.

Kelly’s past couple of weeks have been quite hectic, especially since the premiere of Hard Knocks. There’s even been some light-hearted banter about geography—specifically regarding directions from their practice field to various locations like the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island.

“At one point, I had some second thoughts,” Kelly shared with a laugh. “I heard quite a few comments from my family, prompting me to wonder if I needed a map for Christmas.” It’s those relatable moments that remind everyone that at the end of the day, he’s still just a football coach.

In terms of injuries, it’s worth noting that RG Greg van Roten, who has a shoulder issue, and KR/PR Gunner Olszewski, recovering from a concussion, returned to practice but only on a limited basis. Meanwhile, defensive players Kayvon Thibodeau, DJ Davidson, Victor Dimukeje, Jamie Gillan, Nick Jones, and Rakeem Nunez-Roches were sidelined for various reasons during practice.
