Syosset Swimming’s Remarkable Winning Streak
The boys’ swimming and diving team from Syosset is on an impressive run, having achieved an astounding 90 straight dual meet victories, a streak that began in early 2015. This accomplishment surpassed the previously held record of 88 wins by Plainview Old Bethpage, which dates back to the 1970s.
Junior Max Yao shared his thoughts with a local news outlet, saying, “While the wins are fantastic, the friendships and memories I’ve created on this varsity team mean even more to me.” He reflected on their 90th victory over Garden City, claiming, “I think the team has truly made me a better person.”
Senior captain Lucas Avni emphasized the strong traditions within the team. “There’s a special bond we share that goes beyond just swimming,” he noted. “We have memorabilia that gets passed around to keep our team spirit alive.”
Yao also formed a familial connection with his teammates. During his eighth-grade year, he received a special heirloom swimsuit and later earned the title of Rookie of the Year on the varsity team. He reminisced about how the team’s all-for-one mentality was solidified during a critical match against Hewlett, aided by an inspiring speech from their captain.
“He really motivated us, telling us that we had what it took to win. It was that push that helped us go for it. I remember that moment vividly; it was exhilarating,” Yao said.
Teammates like Avni have stayed focused on continuing the winning legacy. He mentioned his aspirations from freshman year, saying, “I knew we had to keep this going as long as we could.” He’s dedicated to working hard every day to honor those who laid the groundwork before him.
Looking ahead, Avni holds onto the swim cap of a record-setting graduate from the 1990s as a symbol of that heritage but is also focused on what’s next. “Everyone wants to reach that 100 points,” he said about the upcoming season’s goals. “I’m really excited about it. In fact, I plan to come back from college to watch that dual meet.”
