Episode 4 of “Fierce Rivalry”
Episode 4, titled “Rose,” brings back the central story of the HBO Max series, focusing on the complicated relationship between Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. It resumes with a scene where the two professional hockey players are engaged in a tense game on the ice, only to later find solace in each other’s arms.
This installment marks a significant shift for Shane and Ilya. Their daytime intimacy, consummated at one of their homes, deepens their connection but also heightens the emotional stakes between them.
As the episode begins, viewers are treated to an intense montage featuring Shane and Ilya, who have been balancing their competitive nature on the ice with a more private flirtation. The typical rhythm of their biannual rendezvous is disrupted when Ilya invites Shane to his home in Boston for an afternoon encounter.
Following their intimate moment, Ilya invites Shane to stay and enjoy some post-coital cuddling. Ilya’s role as the host further emphasizes their growing bond, as he prepares a tuna melt and offers Shane a ginger ale—an ordinary domestic scene that reveals their vulnerability to each other.
Connor Story, who plays Ilya, commented on the emotional weight of these moments, saying, “These characters go through many firsts together. It might not be as new for Ilya, but for Shane, it’s a big step.” He also noted how their initial discomfort becomes apparent as the episode unfolds.
Director Jacob Tierney uses various cinematic techniques in this episode to portray intimacy. Unlike previous dimly lit hotel scenes, Episode 4 features the warm light of Ilya’s home, symbolizing their emerging comfort and confidence in their relationship.
“We discussed how light and color could represent their evolving dynamic,” Hudson Williams, who plays Shane, explained. “It’s as if the characters are metaphorically coming out of the shadows.” Story elaborated on the contrasting aesthetics, suggesting that the bright, hyperbolic visual style during hockey scenes sets them apart from the more intimate moments shared by the two characters.
However, the episode concludes on a note of uncertainty. After a meaningful exchange on Ilya’s couch, where they address each other by their first names—a significant milestone—Shane leaves, only to later meet Hollywood starlet Rose Landry. This public romance ignites jealousy in Ilya for the first time.
“Ilya has always been self-assured when it comes to intimacy, but Shane initially feels out of his depth,” Story said. As their emotional vulnerability deepens, tensions rise, leaving viewers questioning where their path will lead.
The episode wraps up with a powerful moment on the dance floor, as a cover of tATu’s queer anthem “All the Things You Said” plays. Shane heads home with Rose, while Ilya is left alone. The question lingers—will they reconnect?
Looking ahead, Episode 5, titled “I’ll Believe in Anything,” is set to premiere on Friday, December 19th at 12:01 AM ET.
