Teenagers Shot While Attempting to Steal Packages in Atlanta
An Atlanta homeowner shot and killed two teenagers who were taking packages from his porch on Thursday afternoon, as confirmed by police.
According to Police Chief Darrin Schielbaum, officers responded to a call about gunfire around 3:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Celeste Lane, located in the Maze neighborhood within the Villages of Cascades complex. This area is notably close to a local high school.
Reports indicated that one of the boys, aged 15, sustained a wound to his leg, while another was in critical condition. The latter, however, underwent surgery that evening and is expected to survive, as stated by WXIA. Another report noted that the second boy was shot in the arm.
Schielbaum also informed that the investigation revealed that the teenagers were in the process of stealing items from the townhome when the homeowner came outside and fired his weapon.
The homeowner was later taken in for questioning by the police, who also executed a search warrant at his residence to further their investigation.
“Thanks to this search warrant, we were able to gather evidence and gain clarity,” Schielbaum shared with the media.
He emphasized that the Atlanta Police Department treats such incidents of gun violence seriously, noting the mayor’s commitment to addressing this issue. “Gun violence is a pressing concern for our city. Whenever a child is harmed, it’s a matter we approach with the utmost seriousness,” he remarked.
The incident has sparked discussions regarding the justification of using lethal force to protect personal property. Joshua Schiffer, an Atlanta criminal defense attorney not involved in the case, remarked that individuals in Georgia are entitled to safeguard themselves and their possessions, but must ensure that the use of deadly force is warranted.
“We need to consider whether the two young men displayed any threatening behavior, or if they fled. The decision made by the homeowner to use lethal force hinges on the specifics of the situation,” Schiffer elaborated, questioning what threats were evident at that moment.
Authorities mentioned that any potential charges against the homeowner will depend on the evidence collected through the ongoing investigation and statements from witnesses.
