Rangers Update on Matt Lempe and Team News

Matt Lempe is gradually making his way back into the Rangers’ lineup.

This 6-foot-9 player joined Friday’s practice in full for the first time since his injury on October 23 against San Jose, where he collided with Ryan Reeves.

“He isn’t going to play tomorrow,” said Rangers coach Mike Sullivan, mentioning the upcoming game against the Canadiens. “He participated in full contact today. Given how long he’s been out, we feel it’s essential for him to practice at full intensity a few times.”

“We’ll monitor his progress, but he’s definitely getting closer.”

After practice, Lempe was spotted offering advice to teammates Noah Laba and Matthew Robertson on improving their game.

In another injury update, defenseman Adam Fox skated alone prior to team practice. The former Norris Trophy winner has been sidelined since November 29 and is currently on long-term injured reserve.

Fox has missed more than the five games needed for the LTIR minimum.

Additionally, Sullivan will be coaching Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. He mentioned that he is frequently communicating with general manager Bill Guerin about the U.S. roster, which is set to be revealed soon.

Guerin, who is also the GM of the Wild, attended the Rangers’ games against the Avalanche and Golden Knights last weekend.

“I’ve been in regular contact with Bill. We’ve had numerous discussions this season,” Sullivan explained. “We even had a Zoom meeting with the whole team a week ago, so there’s been quite a bit of communication during this process.”

“We understand the uniqueness of this situation and aim to establish as objective a process as we can.”
