Dick Van Dyke Approaches 100 with Vitality and Joy

Dick Van Dyke is about to celebrate a significant milestone—his 100th birthday on December 13th. He attributes this remarkable longevity to a daily routine inspired by his wife, Arlene Silver.

Known for iconic roles in “Mary Poppins” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” Van Dyke is also featured in an upcoming documentary titled “Dick Van Dyke: 100th Celebration,” which will be released in theaters during his birthday weekend.

According to film director Steve Boettcher, the secret to Van Dyke’s youthful spirit even at the age of 100 is quite straightforward. His wife, Arlene, keeps him active—engaging in singing, dancing, and generally staying on the move.

“Arlene is truly an asset,” Boettcher remarked. “They’re like kids together. They both have a passion for singing, and they start their mornings with music.”

Boettcher further explained that Van Dyke’s commitment to an active lifestyle contributes significantly to his well-being. “She plays an influential role in keeping him vibrant and engaged with music,” he noted, adding that this might be vital for a long life.

Married since 2012, Van Dyke, now 99, and his wife, who is 54, share an affectionate bond, despite a notable age gap. Boettcher humorously stated that Van Dyke often considers himself “immature,” suggesting that they complement each other beautifully.

In their daily routine, they prioritize laughter and fitness. Boettcher highlighted that Van Dyke really does live an enviable life filled with joy and laughter, basking in the California sun.

“He lives a life full of joy, laughter, and workouts,” Boettcher said. “Malibu is perfect for him; it really enhances his peaceful existence.”

Beyond daily exercise, Van Dyke finds time to appreciate the little things—he believes in practicing gratitude regularly and staying physically active. In an essay for British Times, he stressed the importance of being active to maintain both mental and physical health.

“I aim to hit the gym three times a week,” Van Dyke shared. “I may not always feel like it, but once I start, I can’t stop. Sure, there are days when the weather makes me want to skip it, but I feel it in my bones if I do.”

He also humorously detailed his exercise routine, saying, “I usually dance between machines at the gym! If I’m really feeling it, I’m belting Broadway songs while I work out.”

Quitting smoking and alcohol years ago has contributed to his well-being. When he’s not exercising, he looks for daily moments to be grateful for, which he feels is crucial for a rich, fulfilling life.

Reflecting on his small-town roots, Boettcher mentioned that Van Dyke focuses on the positive. “He believes there’s always a good side to life, which shapes his perspective,” he said. “Van Dyke’s humor and kindness have made him beloved in Hollywood.” His legacy in family entertainment is undeniable and deeply cherished by fans.

Interestingly, Van Dyke mentioned a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity he declined—the chance to play James Bond after Sean Connery. Recalling the moment, he joked about how his British accent might not have cut it for the role.

As he approaches his birthday, Van Dyke is more about the joy he’s shared through his performances. His legacy—through works like “Mary Poppins” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show”—is what he hopes will endure long after he’s gone.

“For me, it’s about the entertainment that I provided,” he said. “All my performances are about bringing joy to others.”
