Impact of Connor Bedard’s Injury on Blackhawks’ Season
As the seconds ticked down to the end of the game, a potential turning point loomed for the Blackhawks. It all went sideways when Connor Bedard, the team’s promising former No. 1 pick, went down with a right shoulder injury during a play against the Blues. Now, he’s officially out for the next game against the Red Wings.
Bedard left the ice awkwardly, clearly favoring his shoulder. Coach Jeff Blashill referred to the incident as a “freak accident” — a term that perhaps conveys just how unexpected and unfortunate this moment was.
Blashill didn’t clarify whether he expected the injury to keep Bedard out for a short time or a more extended period, expressing a desire to wait for more information, which should come by Monday. “I don’t want to speculate,” he noted. “He won’t be playing tomorrow, so we’ll have updates as soon as we can.”
The injury occurred in a somewhat chaotic scene during the game. Bedard was vying for the puck against Blues center Brayden Schenn when Schenn fell to his knees, seemingly forcing Bedard backward. The young player hit the ice and immediately showed signs of distress in his shoulder.
Bedard quickly exited the ice, visibly pained, and was assisted by a trainer as he hurried into the tunnel. ESPN+ commentator Kathy Campbell-Pascall remarked on the moment, noting how troubling it appeared, as Bedard was seen holding his right arm high and leaving the rink with discomfort.
Interestingly, Blashill did not directly accuse Schenn of dirty play regarding the incident. “We’ll have to review the situation,” he mentioned, seemingly caught between assessing the play and acknowledging the unfortunate circumstances.
“I honestly believe this was just bad luck,” he added. Losing Bedard would be a significant setback for a Chicago team that seems to be making strides toward playoff contention — a goal not reached since 2020.
Currently, Bedard ranks third in the NHL with 43 points and has scored 19 goals, marking him as a crucial player for the Blackhawks, who have 32 points and a record of 13-12-6.
