Trump Supports Primary Challenge in Indiana
President Donald Trump has intensified his push for a primary challenge against an Indiana Republican who has opposed the state’s redistricting efforts.
“The Republicans in the Indiana Senate who voted against the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives should be ashamed,” Trump posted on Truth Social early Saturday. “All of these people should be ‘primed’, starting with a total loser named Rod Bray. I’ll be there to help!”
“Indiana, where I won big, is the only state in the Union to do this!” he added.
The redistricting map faced rejection in the Indiana State Senate, voted down 19-31. Twenty-one Republicans sided with ten Democrats against the bill, which Trump had warned could face trouble.
This map was presented to the Indiana State Legislature previously. Had it passed, it would have likely divided the more liberal northwestern region into two districts and broken up Indianapolis into four, potentially giving Republicans an advantage across all nine districts.
In another post on Truth Social, Trump criticized Indiana Senator Rod Bray as one of the “suckers” who seems aligned with Democrats, referring to figures like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.
“Everyone who voted against redistricting and Republican success in Washington, D.C., will definitely be participating in the MAGA primaries in the spring,” Trump stated. “If Republicans don’t do what it takes to save the country, they will ultimately lose everything to the Democrats.”
“He’s probably going to lose the next primary,” Trump said about Bray. “I hope he does, because he did something very, very bad.”
There have been claims that Trump threatened to cut federal aid to states; however, the White House has refuted this.
“President Trump loves the great state of Indiana,” White House Press Secretary Davis Engle remarked, stating that Trump “has never threatened to cut federal funding and any claim to the contrary is 100% fake news.”
On Thursday, Indiana Governor Mike Braun expressed his support for the Trump administration in addressing members of the party deemed disloyal.
“I am deeply disappointed that a small number of misguided state senators have teamed up with Democrats to deny this opportunity to protect Hoosiers with fair maps and reject President Trump’s leadership. Ultimately, decisions like this have political consequences,” Braun posted on X.
“I will work with the president to challenge these people who do not represent the best interests of Hoosiers,” he added.
