Mass Shooting at Brown University

The New England Patriots expressed their sorrow over the mass shooting that occurred at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, resulting in at least two fatalities and nine injuries. They stated they were “heartbroken” over the events.

Authorities reported that a person of interest was taken into custody early Sunday morning after the incident. The arrest took place at a hotel in Coventry, though the individual hasn’t been publicly identified. According to Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez, the suspect is in his 30s.

The Patriots released a statement mentioning, “Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. We would like to thank the first responders and law enforcement who acted quickly to protect our students, faculty, staff, and community.” They added, “We stand by Brown University and our Rhode Island neighbors during this difficult time.”

On Sunday afternoon, the Patriots are scheduled to face off against the Buffalo Bills, with Gillette Stadium located roughly 25 miles from the university. Interestingly, the Bills were also in the area, staying at a nearby hotel, and both their players and staff were reported safe.

Brown University has a rich history, having produced over 50 NFL players, with Bills defensive tackle Michael Hecht being the only current player from the university. He is currently on the disabled reserve list.

In light of the events, university officials canceled all remaining classes, exams, and assignments for the fall semester. They stated that students could leave campus and go home, while those remaining would have access to necessary services and support.

Provost Francis Doyle emphasized the importance of focusing on community care and support during this tough time, highlighting the grief and anxiety affecting many.
