Suspect Arrested After Shooting at Brown University
Authorities have apprehended a suspect linked to a shooting incident at Brown University that occurred early Sunday morning, resulting in two fatalities and nine injuries.
According to Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez, the individual in custody is in his 30s. Thankfully, law enforcement stated they are not looking for additional suspects at this time.
The gunfire erupted Saturday afternoon in a classroom within the Barth & Hawley School of Engineering during final exams. The shooter, armed with a handgun, fired more than 40 rounds of 9mm ammunition. Investigators recovered two loaded 30-round magazines, though the firearm itself had yet to be discovered as of Sunday morning.
Footage released by the police shows the suspect, dressed in black, leaving the scene with a degree of calmness. Some witnesses mentioned that he might have been wearing a camouflage mask.
Following the shooting, FBI agents arrived to provide assistance. In a statement, FBI Director Kash Patel expressed condolences for those affected and promised updates as more information becomes available.
Brown University President Christina Paxson shared that out of the shooting victims, ten are students, with one in critical condition at a Rhode Island hospital. Six others are stable but still require intensive care.
“Everyone is struggling to cope, yet we have a long road to recovery ahead,” Paxson remarked. “Our community is resilient, and we will overcome this—though it is undoubtedly devastating.”
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley reflected on the city’s readiness for such tragic events. “We always understood that it could happen anywhere, including here. It’s not something we want to train for, but we do,” he said.
Governor Dan McKee of Rhode Island referred to the incident as an “unthinkable tragedy,” emphasizing the profound impact it has had on the community.
