Mayor-Elect Condemns Anti-Semitic Attack in Sydney
On Sunday, Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani expressed his outrage over what he called a “despicable act of anti-Semitic terrorism” during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Australia. He pledged to ensure the safety of Jewish New Yorkers.
At least two gunmen opened fire during the “Hanukkah-by-the-Sea” event, tragically resulting in 11 deaths, including children, and leaving at least 29 others injured.
In a post on X, Mamdani said, “Today’s attack on Sydney’s Hanukkah festival was a despicable act of anti-Semitic terrorism. I mourn those killed and continue to pray for their families, the Jewish community, and the Chabad movement.” He added that while they await more details, the initial information is already devastating.
One of the victims was identified as Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who had strong connections to Crown Heights. Recently, he had called on the Australian Prime Minister for increased support for Israel. Mamdani reflected on the sorrow, noting, “Another Jewish community has been plunged into grief and loss, with a holiday of light turning into a painful day of darkness.” He highlighted how this incident represents a worrisome trend of violence against Jews worldwide.
“Too many people no longer feel safe to be themselves, to express their faith publicly, or to worship in a synagogue without the presence of armed guards,” he said. “What occurred in Bondi is a fear that many Jews carry in their own neighborhoods.”
Mamdani, who is the first Muslim mayor-elect of New York City, has faced challenges in his relationship with the local Jewish community during his campaign, particularly regarding rhetoric that many found concerning. However, he reassured Jewish residents of his commitment to their safety. “If I become mayor, I will work every day to keep Jewish New Yorkers safe on the streets, on the subways, and every moment of every day,” he vowed. “Let us unite in this cause and push this horrific violence into the past.”
Hundreds attended the Hanukkah by the Sea event at Bondi Beach. A dramatic video captured the bravery of a man in a white shirt who intervened to disarm one of the attackers, potentially saving numerous lives. Local media identified this courageous individual as Ahmed Al Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit shop owner.
Law enforcement officials reported that one suspect was killed, another injured, and they are looking into the possibility of a third shooter being involved.
Remarkably, Sunday marked the beginning of Hanukkah. Mamdani concluded his statement by encouraging everyone to respond to hate with urgency and action as Jewish New Yorkers lit the menorah amidst their grief.
