Celebrities Outshining Congress in Advocacy
It seems that America’s top celebrity is getting things done more effectively than Congress itself. There’s a lot of frustration with Congress—people often feel it’s unproductive, and with figures like Senator Chuck Grassley, who is in his nineties, less inclined to engage with President Trump’s nominees, it raises eyebrows. Interestingly, two notable A-list celebrities have stepped up to show they can wield political influence comparable to lawmakers, and it’s not all about throwing money around.
For example, pop sensation Nicki Minaj has become a key advocate for persecuted Christians, particularly in Nigeria. It’s quite striking how her efforts have advanced their cause more than many politicians have managed. In a recent UN speech, she called on world leaders to bolster protections for Christians, delivering a message that resonated better than those typically heard in Congress.
“I stand here as a proud New Yorker with deep gratitude that we live in a country where we can worship God freely and safely, regardless of our beliefs, backgrounds, or politics,” she stated. “No group should be persecuted for practicing their religion, and we don’t have to share the same beliefs to respect each other.” That kind of message carries weight and seems to touch many people, myself included.
Minaj has also been vocal about issues closer to home, such as criticizing California Governor Gavin Newsom’s remarks about transgender children. She made a point on social media that got many talking. “Imagine being a guy rushing to see his trans kids. Even trans adults wouldn’t do that. A normal adult just wants their kids healthy and happy,” she shared. It’s a refreshing take, albeit unconventional.
While Minaj hasn’t exactly been known as a conservative figure, her stance could potentially resonate with young fans way more than traditional Republican commentary would. Many younger listeners likely don’t pay much attention to what older politicians like Grassley have to say. They might actually listen to their pop icon instead.
Then, there’s Kim Kardashian, who has also made a name for herself in political circles. She’s worked on criminal justice reform and has had meetings with both President Biden and Trump to push for change. A notable achievement was her successful lobbying effort to convince Trump to commute a life sentence for a woman convicted of a non-violent drug offense.
It’s easy to mock celebrities for their sometimes misguided political views. Many tend to lean liberal and often appear out of touch. Yet, when you think about it, Congress doesn’t really fare much better. Washington lawmakers can be just as superficial and misinformed as the stars in Hollywood. At least celebrities like Minaj and Kardashian have captured public interest in ways that many politicians simply can’t.
