The Rise of Airport Showers for Travelers

Once seen as a luxury for international travelers, having the option to shower at the airport is getting more attention lately. As people embark on lengthy trips and endure extended layovers, this service seems increasingly important, especially with the growing emphasis on wellness in our daily lives.

Travelers are now sharing their airport experiences on platforms like TikTok. These videos highlight various amenities, from private concessions to well-equipped shower facilities. There’s also some chatter about why we haven’t seen more wellness options at airports, like public shower suites or gyms.

Frequent flyers are even exchanging experiences about lounge showers on Reddit, noting significant discrepancies in availability based on airline status and airport facilities. A recent $1 billion initiative announced by the Trump administration—aimed at family-friendly enhancements—has also brought some focus to this topic.

Many travelers remark that being able to shower during long travel days makes a noticeable difference, especially after overnight flights or long international layovers. Peter Shankman, a corporate speaker and author who logs over 250,000 miles annually, suggests a few tips for those considering airport showers for the first time.

According to Shankman, some of the best shower facilities are found overseas, where lengthy layovers make it essential to refresh. He puts it simply: “You’ve been on the plane all night. It’s greasy and disgusting. Just taking a shower can really make a world of difference.”

He particularly enjoys the shower facilities at Zurich Airport. There, travelers have the ability to freshen up in dedicated bathrooms before heading to their next destination. In the U.S., lounges like United Polaris, American Flagship, and Delta Sky Club also feature shower suites. Membership programs also provide access to lounges with shower facilities worldwide.

Access to these facilities varies widely depending on the airport and the airline. Usually, lounge membership or elite status provides the best chance to utilize these showers. Some lounges do offer day passes, and certain international airports have standalone shower or spa options for travelers willing to pay.

After checking into a lounge, the process is generally straightforward. Travelers visit the shower desk, get assigned a room, or wait for their turn. Many lounges also update guests via an app or buzzer when the shower is available.

It’s important to keep timing in mind. Shankman advises heading to the lounge right after arriving at the airport to avoid long waits—especially when multiple international flights land around the same time. He has seen people wait two or three hours for shower access on occasion.

First-time users should also be prepared. “Always bring clean socks and underwear,” Shankman suggests. It’s not ideal to shower and then put back on the same clothes worn during the flight. Travelers looking for shower availability at a specific airport can consult terminal or lounge details on the respective airport’s website.
