A bystander was recorded confronting a gunman just before a tragic shooting incident inspired by ISIS occurred at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. Unfortunately, despite efforts to subdue him, the gunman managed to overpower and ultimately kill two witnesses, according to officials.
Reports reveal that the bystanders were identified as Boris Gulman and Sofia Gulman. They were simply passing by when they noticed the assailant exiting his vehicle. Boris initially picked up the weapon from the attacker, gaining a momentary advantage. However, the gunman managed to retrieve another rifle during the struggle and shot the couple, making them the first casualties of the massacre.
The family expressed their heartbreak over the unexpected and senseless loss of Boris and Sofia in a statement, saying, “While nothing can ease the pain of losing Boris and Sofia, we feel overwhelming pride for their bravery and selflessness.”
In related news, Rabbi killed in the attack had warned the Australian prime minister about the increasing anti-Semitism in the country.
Witnesses have recounted the events, sharing dashcam footage that shows, “You can see the gunman here. He fired from here, he fired from here. And look, this guy goes and tackles him and slams him to the ground.” This was said by a witness who spoke in Mandarin, as per translation by news outlets.
Authorities have since identified the attackers—a father and son aged 50 and 24. The father was killed at the scene, while the son was shot by police and is in critical condition in the hospital. Officials noted that they found improvised explosive devices and homemade ISIS flags in their vehicle.
On that tragic day, two men opened fire on families celebrating Hanukkah at Bondi Beach, resulting in 15 deaths and injuring over 20 others. The Australian government is treating the incident as a terrorist attack directed at the Jewish community.
Another bystander, Ahmed al-Ahmed, an immigrant to Australia, bravely seized the gun from one of the attackers. His lawyer mentioned that despite being severely injured, Ahmed stands by his actions, expressing he would do it all again. However, he’s currently experiencing significant pain due to his injuries.
The lawyer, Sam Issa, provided updates on Ahmed’s condition, mentioning that he was undergoing surgery and expressed concern that Ahmed could lose his left arm. “His condition is much worse than expected,” Issa added, reflecting on the severity of the injuries.
President Donald Trump acknowledged Ahmed’s courage, referring to him as a “very brave man” and expressing his admiration for his actions.
Following the Bondi Beach attack, which marks the deadliest mass shooting in Australia since 1996, leaders have pledged to strengthen the nation’s already strict gun laws. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced proposed measures, which include restricting the number of firearms individuals can possess. He stated, “The government is ready to take all necessary actions, including the need for stricter gun control,” after discussions with the national cabinet.
