Why chief of staff Susie Wiles describes teetotaling Trump as having an 'alcoholic's personality'

Wiles Discusses Trump’s “Alcoholic Personality”

In a recent interview, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles suggested that President Trump has what she describes as an “alcoholic personality,” noting his belief that “nothing is impossible.”

Wiles, at 68 years old, shared these insights with author Chris Whipple during one of 11 interviews held in Trump’s second term. Excerpts of their conversation were published in Vanity Fair on Tuesday.

This choice of phrasing might surprise some of Trump’s long-time supporters. The president frequently asserts that he doesn’t drink, often referencing his late brother Fred, who passed away at 42 due to health issues linked to heavy drinking.

In July, Wiles discussed her father’s struggles with alcoholism, revealing her experiences helping legendary NFL broadcaster Pat Summerall enter rehab in 1992 during a conversation with The Post’s Miranda Devine.

She recalled that when her mother sought professional help, part of her process involved writing letters to her children, which she wouldn’t read until she reached the Betty Ford Clinic. Wiles, being the eldest of Summerall’s three kids, reflected on the impact of those letters, saying she felt the need to voice her concerns about her father’s behavior.

Despite the challenges, Summerall ultimately overcame his addiction after his time in rehab.

“Alcoholism strains relationships, as it did between my father and me,” Wiles explained in the Vanity Fair interview.

She acknowledged that while some experts might disagree, she believes that high-functioning alcoholics tend to amplify their personalities when they drink, allowing her to consider herself somewhat knowledgeable about such “big personalities.”
