Michigan Players Feel 'Deceived' After Sherrone Moore Incident

Aftermath of Cheating Scandal Leaves Michigan Players Feeling Betrayed

In the wake of the cheating scandal and the arrest of Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore, the players left behind are experiencing feelings of betrayal.

Moore was indicted on Friday and faces charges including third-degree burglary, stalking, and trespassing for breaking into his mistress’ home and allegedly threatening suicide after she informed university officials about their relationship.

Michigan’s interim coach, Biff Poggi, spoke with reporters on Monday about the challenges players are facing now that scouting activities have been disrupted. “It was a tumultuous time,” said Poggi. “There’s a mix of disbelief and anger. Right now, the kids, frankly, feel very betrayed, and we’re working to get through that.”

The chaos stemming from Moore’s exit has led to an extensive investigation into Michigan’s athletic department. While the investigation aims to clarify the circumstances involving Moore, Poggi is focused on addressing the confusion and shock among the players and retaining his newly signed players.

“There are many ways to tell someone you love them, but showing them is cheap and takes a lot of time. What you really need is a willingness to listen,” he noted.

Poggi acknowledged the complexity of the situation, emphasizing the importance of listening to the players, their stories, and what they—and their parents—are feeling. “There’s a lot of listening, a range of emotions, and we’re just navigating through that,” he remarked.

“They’re not done yet, and I don’t think they’ll be for a while. The mission that Ward Manuel, the athletic director, gave me when he appointed me as interim coach was to care for the kids, and that’s where I’m dedicating my time.”

Poggi’s initial opportunity to observe the impact of his efforts will come on December 31, when the Wolverines face the Texas Longhorns in the Citrus Bowl.
