Toronto Tempo Unveils New Jersey Designs Ahead of WNBA Entry
The Toronto Tempo has officially revealed its jersey designs, which is yet another step toward its inclusion in the WNBA. During an eagerly awaited event held at Toronto’s Eaton Center Mall, the team introduced its Explorer Edition and Heroine Edition jerseys.
Similar to all WNBA franchises, Toronto plans to have three jersey editions. The Heroine Edition is a traditional white jersey featuring the team name, while the Explorer Edition highlights the team’s color scheme along with the city name. A third option, the Rebel jersey, will allow for more creativity and aims to showcase the team’s unique identity.
At the moment, Toronto has launched just the Heroine and Explorer editions, unlike the Golden State team last season, which released a complete set.
Explorer Edition (Tempo Bordeaux)
The Explorer jersey stands out with its distinctive Tempo Bordeaux color, accented by blue piping. The city name and player numbers also appear in blue, contributing to its vibrant look. A Tempo stripe, symbolizing the logo, is located on the side, although the logo itself isn’t present on the jersey.
Player numbers are displayed on the back, with names positioned below, which is a change from the typical format. Tempo’s press release claimed that this “modern” design aims to enhance the franchise’s visibility within lifestyle culture and provide a stylish look that can be confidently worn off the court too.
Heroine Edition White & Borealis Blue
The Heroine Edition, another take on the traditional white jersey as per WNBA regulations, keeps some design elements from the Explorer version. Along with similar side stripes and placements for numbers and names, this edition features the team name in lieu of the city name, rendered in a burgundy block font edged in blue.
In terms of the trim, it incorporates blue and burgundy colors, reversing the color scheme of the Explorer jersey.
Whitney Bell, Chief Marketing Officer for the Toronto Tempo, shared in a press release, “Today marks another significant milestone in our journey to create Canada’s first WNBA team. Every detail of these uniforms is intentional… We can’t wait for our players and fans to wear them with pride.”
Reacting to the New Designs
As with many recent design reveals, this jersey launch faced some scrutiny. Critics, often casual observers of sports, may not realize the multiple regulations guiding such designs. The team needed to produce a jersey that not only conformed to WNBA standards but also had the potential to attract sales.
Regardless of opinions, there’s no denying the uniqueness of the color choices. In fact, the hues appear far more vibrant in person compared to online images. The combination of Bordeaux and blue is quite visually striking, and the colors have already received positive attention on various apparel and promotional materials throughout past events.
From a design perspective, the jerseys have a lot going for them. Edging and neckline piping add a vintage charm that complements the bold colors. The playful use of colors in the lettering and numbers adds depth, while the italicized logo and subtle side stripes help maintain visual interest without overwhelming the overall design.
On social media, some have voiced concerns about the size of sponsorship logos, which is a trend not exclusive to the Tempo. Unlike the NBA standards, there’s no necessity for large advertising patches on these jerseys. It’s also worth recognizing that, prior to this, many WNBA jerseys lacked distinctive designs, often using standardized templates across the league.
Looking at the historical context, remembering jerseys without team names can make the bold new designs feel foreign to newcomers or those casual fans who recently discovered the WNBA through the Tempo.
With this perspective, it’s worth appreciating the evolution toward creative and unique jersey offerings in women’s basketball.
The new jerseys are designed to be versatile and easy to wear. They’re stylish enough for layering yet bold enough to stand on their own. They blend in with modern fashion trends that favor simplicity and a nod to vintage styles, making them appealing for fans to flaunt effortlessly whether on game day or around town.
