Ravens Players Give Back by Washing Feet and Distributing Shoes
NFL stars Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry were among a group of Baltimore Ravens players who took part in a special event on Monday aimed at promoting servant leadership, inspired by the teachings of Jesus. They washed the feet of local elementary school students and provided them with new shoes.
The event took place at Severn Elementary School, where students not only received shoes but also learned about personal finance, thanks to sponsorship from M&T Bank and EVERFI. Jackson, Henry, and fellow Ravens player Zay Flowers engaged in this act of servitude, demonstrating leadership through humility.
On the team’s Instagram account, the Ravens highlighted the meaningful experience: “Ravens players served our students today by washing their feet and providing them with new shoes. These acts of service, led by our team pastors, demonstrate the importance of humility and service to others.”
As a bit of context, Jackson and Henry hold key positions on the team, with Jackson as the starting quarterback and Henry as the running back. Flowers is set to start as a wide receiver.
This kind of service echoes a powerful narrative from the New Testament, specifically the moment before Jesus was crucified, where he famously washed the feet of his disciples—a gesture showcasing humble leadership. It’s a moment that resonates with many, highlighting the value of serving others.
Interestingly, faith has been quite prominent in the NFL this season. A number of players actively participated in the “My Cause My Cleats” campaign, which allowed them to advocate for various Christian organizations. For instance, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy supported Samaritan’s Purse, while Kansas City kicker Harrison Butker highlighted the Herzog Foundation, focused on expanding Christ-centered education. Other players, like New York Giants linebacker Swayze Bozeman and Chicago Bears quarterback Case Keenum, expressed their support for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
