The Complex Persona of Amal Clooney
Amal Clooney is widely recognized as a groundbreaking human rights lawyer, known for holding powerful leaders accountable. But alongside this impressive profile, she’s often seen through the lens of her marriage to a famous actor, George Clooney.
However, her critics point out what they view as a selective approach to supporting causes, particularly those in opposition to Israel, and raise eyebrows about her associations with hard-line Islamist groups.
Recently, George stirred the pot when he mentioned in an interview that she might have been involved in drafting a constitution for the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, an organization that, as of now, former President Trump is considering labeling a terrorist group.
In a clip from a 2022 interview with Drew Barrymore, George recounted calling Amal shortly after they met in 2012. He said she responded that she was “at a Muslim Brotherhood meeting right now” because she was working on constitutional reforms for Egypt. He noted how different their lives are, hinting at the complexity of her activism.
This context is important, as those involved in the Muslim Brotherhood have ties to Mohamed Mursi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president, who was in power for a brief period before being ousted in 2013. Mursi, a long-time member of the Brotherhood, had made controversial statements in the past about Israel and its people.
Experts have critiqued the Brotherhood’s constitutional aspirations, suggesting that any document drafted by them may lack fairness or comprehensiveness, as their ultimate goal remains a caliphate governed by Sharia law.
Despite George’s supportive remarks, it’s important to note that no official evidence ties Amal directly to the Brotherhood’s constitutional efforts. She may have only consulted or offered legal guidance during the meetings.
An anonymous American law professor remarked on Amal’s role, implying she might have been there to soften the trial’s appearance. They raised questions about her credibility, especially given that, on her foundation’s website, she highlights her work supporting journalists and fighting for Yazidi victims’ rights—both admirable pursuits.
However, Brooke Goldstein, a Miami-based human rights lawyer and director of the Lawfare Project, expressed concerns. She pointed out that Amal’s connections with such groups, along with her comments accusing Israel of genocide, seem to clash with her human rights advocacies.
Amal’s involvement with the International Criminal Court (ICC) has also come under scrutiny. The ICC has issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Yet, the court lacks jurisdiction over Israel, leading many experts to dismiss the warrants as illegitimate.
Some legal scholars, including Eugene Kontorovich, argue that Amal’s actions merely reflect the sentiments of Europe’s critics of Israel rather than a firm moral stance. Another academic criticized her role at the ICC, underscoring that its commission seemed more like a showcase of celebrities than experts.
Today, concerns about her legal work have heightened. Amal, along with fellow British lawyers involved in the ICC, faces potential bans from the U.S. for their participation in the court’s proceedings, particularly after sanctions were imposed under the Trump administration.
In light of these challenges, Amal opted to hold the Clooney Foundation for Justice gala in London instead of New York, amidst fears surrounding her ability to travel freely.
This year’s gala highlighted notable achievements in human rights advocacy and featured prominent award recipients, including philanthropist Melinda French Gates.
George, a dedicated advocate for human rights through his various initiatives, has co-founded organizations aimed at raising awareness about crises like that in Darfur, demonstrating a shared commitment to social justice between the couple. The Clooney Foundation, launched in 2016, has reportedly raised substantial funds, highlighting their ongoing efforts to create positive change.
