93-year-old veteran from Philadelphia killed in his home, suspect arrested

Charges Filed in Stabbing Murder of 93-Year-Old Veteran

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office announced on Monday that a suspect has been charged in connection with the violent murder of a 93-year-old military veteran in his home.

Lafayette Daley, the victim, was brutally stabbed multiple times in the chest and head back in early December, according to local authorities and their Homicide/Non-Fatal Shooting Unit. Mr. Daley was known as a veteran and had a strong presence in his community.

The suspect has been identified as 53-year-old Coy Thomas. After the attack, it is alleged that Thomas took off in Daley’s car, later selling it and attempting to withdraw money using the victim’s debit card.

Thomas faces multiple charges, including murder, robbery, unauthorized use of a vehicle, possession of criminal instruments, theft, and receiving stolen property.

Details of the Incident

On December 5, police conducted a welfare check at Daley’s residence after concerns arose about his well-being. Upon arriving, officers noted that the victim’s white Chrysler 300 was missing.

There were clear signs of a struggle inside the home. Officers found Daley unconscious, suffering from significant lacerations and head trauma. The District Attorney’s Office confirmed that he had been fatally stabbed multiple times.

“Mr. Daley, a beloved member of his family and community, should never have faced such a senseless act of violence in his own home,” stated District 3 Senator Sharif Street.

Investigation and Arrest

Daley had not been in contact with anyone for nearly two days before his niece alerted authorities to his absence. Staff from the senior center he frequented also expressed concern over his disappearance.

Surveillance footage showed Thomas entering the property around 11 a.m. on December 3, shortly before leaving in Daley’s vehicle.

Described as a black man wearing a black jacket, white hoodie, red sweatpants, and white sneakers, Thomas was caught on camera during the incident.

Detectives reported a fraudulent attempt to use Daley’s debit card on December 8, a few days after his body was discovered. The victim’s car was located on December 9 and had allegedly been sold for $900.

A preliminary hearing for Coy Thomas is slated for December 29, 2025.

Assistant District Attorney Ashley Tocilowski expressed that the authorities are committed to ensuring justice in this tragic case. District Attorney Larry Krasner noted that teamwork from the community and law enforcement played a crucial role in addressing crime in the city.

Philadelphia officials continue to work with law enforcement to gather more information on this case.
