Mayor Celebrates Anniversary with Time Capsule

Mayor Eric Adams marked his four-year anniversary in office by burying a time capsule at City Hall on Tuesday, looking ahead to a future gift for New Yorkers in a decade.

The “Adams Administration Time Capsule” was filled with various items from his time in office, such as a padlock used to shut down illegal marijuana shops, a symbolic key representing his “City of Yes” housing policy, and a part of an NYPD drone.

“This time capsule will be sealed and buried here so New Yorkers can open it in 10 years and reflect on one of the most transformative periods in our city’s history,” Adams stated in the Rotunda of City Hall.

He expressed a sense of readiness for this chapter to close, remarking, “I did what I had to do. I left everything I had on the ice,” as moving trucks gathered outside.

As a nod to his accomplishments, Adams included vinyl records, playing on the “records” he broke during his tenure. Meanwhile, First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro contributed a bicycle speedometer to emphasize efforts to lower e-bike speed limits.

Adams also took a moment to express gratitude to his staff for their support throughout his challenges, including a federal bribery indictment in 2024 that ended up being dropped.

“We’ve had our ups and downs. From the outside, it might look like all we’ve done is raise eyebrows,” he remarked. “But no, we laughed a lot.”

After the ceremony, the time capsule was placed outside the east entrance of City Hall, where a stone tablet was uncovered, and a plaque was installed to mark the location.

Although Adams hasn’t revealed his next career move, sources suggest he plans to embark on a trip to Mexico before heading to Europe.

When asked about his travel plans, Adams said, “Drink a single malt Scotch and have fun.”
