Dolphins reportedly sit Tua Tagovailoa during a challenging season

Quarterback Change for the Miami Dolphins

There’s a significant development coming from the Miami Dolphins as they make a notable shift at the quarterback position.

Reports indicate that Tua Tagovailoa is being benched following his difficulty in the Dolphins’ 28-15 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team plans to move forward with Quinn Ewers, a seventh-round draft pick from Texas in the 2025 NFL Draft, as his replacement.

This decision is quite unexpected, especially considering Tagovailoa just signed a four-year, $212 million contract extension in July 2024, which includes $167 million guaranteed.

Interestingly, this follows a season where Tagovailoa led the NFL in passing yards with 4,624 in 2023. In fact, the year before, he also topped the league with a 72.9% completion rate, albeit in just 11 games.

However, this season has seen a stark decline; Tagovailoa presently holds the league lead in interceptions with 15. His stats reveal a completion rate of 67.7%, totaling 2,660 yards, with 20 touchdowns alongside those 15 interceptions, all over 14 games.

In the recent match against the Steelers, Tagovailoa completed 22 of 28 passes for 253 yards, throwing two touchdowns and one interception. But much of this performance came when the game was already slipping away from the Dolphins.

With this loss, Miami’s playoff chances were dashed. Starting off the season poorly at 2-7, they managed to win their last four games leading up to this Steelers matchup, which had momentarily kept their hopes alive. Unfortunately, they now stand at 6-8, officially out of playoff contention.

Interestingly, the Dolphins could have opted to bring Zach Wilson on board, but they decided to go with Ewers instead. With only brief appearances so far, Ewers has completed 5 of 8 passes for 53 yards.
