DHS rejects Ilhan Omar's recent claim: 'Completely FALSE'

Ilhan Omar Accuses ICE of Mistreatment

In a recent interview, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) claimed that her son was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and was asked to prove his citizenship. This statement was made during a discussion aired on WCCO-TV. Other prominent figures, including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D), quickly pushed back against her assertions.

Governor Walz stated, “Congressman Omar’s son was stopped by ICE while following the law on his way home from Target. This is racial profiling, not a targeted operation to find violent criminals.”

Omar’s remarks received swift criticism. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) noted that there were no records of any ICE officers detaining her son, suggesting that her narrative might be exaggerated. They stated, “It’s shameful that Rep. Omar would use this public relations campaign to make accusations that demonize ICE without any evidence,” labeling these claims as reckless and unfounded.

DHS emphasized that immigration enforcement is based solely on a person’s legal status in the U.S., invoking the Fourth Amendment as a guideline for enforcement actions.

In defense of her claims, Omar’s office reiterated that her son and others were indeed subjected to ICE stops, citing racial profiling and demands for citizenship verification. They also criticized ICE as being beyond reform, pointing out issues with the agency’s record-keeping.

The situation is further complicated by ongoing investigations into Omar’s past related to allegations of immigration fraud, particularly concerning her marriage history. According to reports, her brother, former Democratic House candidate AJ Khan, challenged her citizenship narrative, asserting discrepancies regarding her age when her father applied for citizenship.

Omar’s assertions about becoming a citizen at age 17 conflict with claims made by Khan, who stated she might have actually been 18 at the time. Official documents suggest inconsistencies about her birth year as well.

As the debate unfolds, questions remain, with public opinions divided. Further clarification from Omar has yet to be seen, and the discourse around immigration continues to ignite strong emotions on all sides.
