Chevrolet's 'Memory Lane' ad pulls on emotions: 'Now I'm teary over an automobile commercial'

Chevrolet’s Touching Holiday Ad Strikes a Chord

Chevrolet has tapped into a deep vein of American sentimentality with its latest holiday advertisement.

The new spot, titled “memory lane,” has gained attention for turning a simple 1987 Chevrolet Suburban into an emotional time capsule, bringing tears to viewers’ eyes.

Rather than showcasing flashy vehicles or roaring engines, the advertisement follows an elderly couple as they embark on their annual winter trip to their family’s vacation home.

As the Suburban navigates through the snow, the real adventure unfolds not along the road, but rather down memory lane.

In a series of nostalgic flashbacks, the SUV evolves into a family scrapbook on wheels. We see children growing up, the loyal family dog aging, teenagers racing through the yard, and parents cherishing fleeting moments, even when the car’s odometer ticks on.

By the end, the couple arrives at their destination, greeted by their grown children and grandchildren, plus a visit to see their son’s new dog. It evokes a sense of nostalgia for the pets that aged alongside them.

Each decade brings bittersweet memories, with the Suburban’s familiar shape serving as a timeless presence in their lives.

There are no dramatic surprises. No transformations to a luxury model. It’s a gentle reminder that cars often become more than just vehicles; they are the backdrop to life itself.

Many viewers seem to resonate deeply with this sentiment.

One fan expressed, “Before this, I thought I could make it through Christmas Day 2025 without tears,” while another admitted, “I don’t know if I’ve ever felt so emotional watching a commercial.” They mentioned that the “conversations, memories, and music” moved them, thanking Chevrolet for the emotional experience.

Other viewers found it particularly touching, especially those who are adult children or have empty nests. “Oh my god, I’m in tears watching this car ad. Losing my kids is just so hard,” one remarked.

Another user described the spot as “chilling from start to finish,” dubbing it a “must-see” and highlighting how every second reminds them of the importance of family.

Some are even calling it “the best Christmas commercial ever made,” suggesting that Chevrolet has truly captured the holiday spirit with this heartfelt portrayal.

This isn’t Chevrolet’s first foray into emotion-driven marketing. In 2023, they created buzz with “A memorable holiday“, where a granddaughter takes her grandmother suffering from Alzheimer’s on a nostalgic road trip set to John Denver’s “Sunshine on My Shoulders.” The 2021 ad, “holiday ride“, showcased a widowed daughter secretly restoring her late wife’s vintage Impala, highlighting the blend of grief and celebration.

According to Steve Majoros, Chevrolet’s chief marketing officer, the goal of their campaigns, originally launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, is to uplift the national spirit while remaining sensitive to current realities.

While this year’s spot leans towards a traditional family narrative, Majoros emphasized that the focus was “apolitical.” He elaborated, “At Chevrolet, we want to be a brand that resonates with all Americans. Our work spans various demographics and geographies, and identity politics don’t dictate our mission.”

Reflecting on the message, he stated, “This year, we wanted to emphasize ‘Let’s take a ride together,’ encouraging unity and a celebration of what truly matters.”
