New Mexico State Lobos Shine in Turquoise Jerseys at Rate Bowl

College football fans tend to have specific expectations for bowl games that lack high stakes—like those not tied to a national championship. However, Friday night offered a delightful twist when the New Mexico State Lobos took center stage against the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Rate Bowl. The crowd erupted in cheers as the Lobos sported their striking turquoise jerseys.

This preparation was no accident; the “Unite in Turquoise” campaign, introduced by New Mexico, was unveiled before the start of the 2025 season. Earlier in the fall, during a game against Utah State, the team showcased these unique uniforms.

The school’s decision to incorporate turquoise into their color scheme dates back to the 1970s, and it was used on jerseys until 1980 when they reverted to cherry and silver. But fans were excited to see a return of this hue in both 2013 and 2022.

“Every uniform announcement includes a storytelling element,” the school commented in August. “None has the significance of the color turquoise for our unity. The importance of turquoise to the state of New Mexico cannot be underestimated, which is why we wear it with pride.” They emphasized their connection to the past, the state, and their identity as New Mexicans.

The Lobos’ decision to revisit this color seemed to resonate well with fans, and the positive reactions were palpable both when the jerseys were initially announced and during the game itself. It was a moment that celebrated unity and state pride, something that athletes and fans alike can rally around.
