Why Are Sports Teams Recognizing Kwanzaa When Black Americans Celebrate Christmas Like Everyone Else?

Kwanzaa Celebrations from Sports Teams Raise Questions

Firstly, I hope everyone had a nice Christmas. With the new year approaching, we’re slowly shaking off that holiday haze. But while I’m still in vacation mode, there’s something that’s been bothering me.

I was scrolling through Twitter earlier today when I stumbled across a sports team’s post wishing everyone a happy Kwanzaa. Then, I saw another, followed by more—eventually, it felt like a flood of Kwanzaa greetings filled my timeline. It was quite the Friday celebration.

NFL teams joined in the festivities, too. It became a sort of avalanche of well-wishes.

MLB teams got into it too.

Even some NBA teams jumped on the bandwagon, posting greetings that felt, well, somewhat disconnected.

And surprisingly, NHL teams joined in as well.

It didn’t stop there—college athletic teams and minor leagues also joined the fray, which just adds to the oddity of it all.

Interestingly, research suggests only about 18% of Black Americans actually celebrate Kwanzaa, while a whopping 82% partake in Christmas. It makes you wonder—what’s going on in the sports world? Why all this emphasis on Kwanzaa? It feels somewhat out of place, don’t you think?
