FBI to Close J. Edgar Hoover Building

FBI Director Kash Patel announced on Friday that the bureau has decided to permanently close the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building, bringing an end to years of discussions regarding its future.

The FBI has also scrapped a nearly $5 billion plan for a new headquarters that wouldn’t have been operational until 2035.

Instead, most of the headquarters staff will be relocated to the existing Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. Patel stated that after over two decades of unsuccessful attempts, the plan to move personnel to modern facilities has finally been made official.

“Working closely with President Trump and Congress, we achieved what no one else was able to,” Patel shared on X. He added that this decision is poised to save billions of dollars, with important safety and infrastructure upgrades already in progress at the Reagan facility.

Once renovations are finished, the majority of employees from the FBI headquarters will transition to the new location. Patel mentioned that while most personnel will be moved, some will stay in the field as efforts continue to maintain a strong presence nationwide.

“This approach directs resources effectively—focusing on homeland security, reducing violent crime, and enhancing national security. It equips today’s FBI employees with better tools at a significantly lower cost,” he said.

Earlier this year, Patel had indicated that staff would be reassigned, moving operations out of the Hoover Building, which has been in use since 1975.

For more than ten years, the FBI and the General Services Administration (GSA) have been exploring various options for a new headquarters, including potential locations in Maryland and Virginia.
