Poptarts Bowl Recap: BYU Cougars vs. Georgia Tech Yellowjackets
Tensions ran high on Saturday night during the Poptarts Bowl, where the BYU Cougars faced off against the Georgia Tech Yellowjackets.
Georgia Tech led for a significant portion of the game, but BYU staged a remarkable comeback, ultimately winning 25-21. With this victory, the Cougars wrapped up their season with a record of 12-2, while Georgia Tech finished at 9-4.
The bowl game’s lighthearted theme of Pop-Tarts brought a unique twist to the event, though the competition itself was anything but trivial.
Celebrating Pop-Tarts in the Bowl Game
Many bowl games are often dismissed as unexciting or meaningless, yet for the third consecutive year, Pop-Tarts injected some fun into the experience. This year, the end zones were creatively decorated with school names displayed in sprinkles, adding a playful touch to the proceedings.
Pop-Tarts Ring of Honor
At Camping World Stadium, Pop-Tarts introduced a “Ring of Honor” to celebrate the flavors showcased in previous bowl games. Examples included Cookies and Cream, Hot Fudge Sundae, and Frosted Wild Berry, all honoring the earlier fan-favorites like Strawberries and Cinnamon Rolls.
Festivities Before Kickoff
While it may not have been as iconic as the Ohio State band, a unique pregame ceremony set the tone in Orlando. Six different types of Pop-Tarts were divided into two playful teams: Sprinkles and Swirls. Sprinkles featured flavors like Protein Slammin Strawberry and Frosted Cherry, while Swirls included Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Frosted Wild Berry.
BYU’s Comeback Led by Bachmeier
Entering the fourth quarter down 21-10, the Cougars had to dig deep for a turnaround. A key moment came when Georgia Tech’s field goal was blocked as the third quarter came to a close, igniting BYU’s resurgence. Touchdowns from Enoch Nawahine and Yobesa Damuni, alongside a crucial two-point conversion by Bachmeier, secured the win for BYU.
The Sweet Prize
The reward for the victorious team was quite the spectacle: three giant Pop-Tarts were set to be ceremoniously lowered into a massive toaster. Protein Slammin Strawberry, Cookies and Cream, and Cherry were all on display, lending an element of humor to the celebration. At one point, Protein Slammin Strawberry even playfully exclaimed, “It’s not a dream…yet,” before making a hasty exit.
Ultimately, Cookies and Cream and Cherry Pop-Tarts were processed in the contraption and served as a celebratory treat to the champions of the Poptarts Bowl.
