Injuries are preventing Jets rookies from gaining important experience as the season winds down.

The Jets’ Rookie Class Faces Tough Finish

The Jets are struggling, particularly with their rookie players. Currently, three members of this year’s draft class are on injured reserve: cornerback Azalei Thomas, linebacker Kiko Mauigoa, and edge rusher Tyler Barron. Additionally, Mason Taylor did not participate on Sunday.

This situation means that some promising rookies are missing out on crucial playing time in the final game of the season. With a disappointing record of 3 wins and 12 losses, the Jets aren’t in a position to gain much, but any improvement from their rookies would certainly be welcomed.

Coach Aaron Glenn expressed his disappointment about the injuries, highlighting the missed opportunities for rookie players to gain valuable experience. “Absolutely,” he said, “It’s hard when you’re counting on them to perform, and they can’t. Those reps are significant for their development.”

For Sunday’s match against the Patriots, the Jets will include right tackle Armando Menbou, safety Malachi Moore, and wide receiver Arian Smith in their lineup. They’ll also have three undrafted free agents starting: quarterback Brady Cook, safety Dean Clark, and nickel corner Jordan Clark.

This rookie-heavy lineup—now featuring second-year cornerback Quantez Stiggers—brings both potential challenges and opportunities for evaluation. There is a chance this youthful group may struggle, but it also allows the Jets to assess their talents more closely going forward.

Glenn mentioned that while injuries are unfortunate, they provide an opportunity to see what players are capable of. “These reps are crucial for our understanding of where our players stand,” he said, “and they’ve shown us some promising things.”

As for concerns about the quarterback position, the Jets have promoted Hendon Hooker from the practice squad for this week’s game. Tyrod Taylor missed Friday’s practice for personal reasons but isn’t considered injured. The team has also placed Justin Fields on injured reserve this week.

The Jets made further roster moves by signing wide receiver Quentin Skinner, defensive back Tre Brown, and offensive lineman Marquise Hayes to the active roster.
