NFL playoff outlook: Implications of Seahawks-Panthers for NFC standings in Week 17

One of the most crucial matches in Week 17 of the 2025 NFL season featured the Seattle Seahawks squaring off against the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.

A win could secure division titles for both teams, although the Seahawks are in a tighter spot to secure the No. 1 seed in the NFC this week.

Let’s unpack the stakes for each team:

Seattle Seahawks playoff implications

Seattle has already secured a playoff spot and currently stands atop both the NFC and NFC West with a 12-3 record. They could clinch both the NFC West title and the top seed in the NFC this weekend.

In terms of divisional standings, the Seahawks hold first place. The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams are right behind them, tied at 11-4. However, the 49ers boast a better divisional record (4-1 as opposed to the Rams’ 3-2), placing them in second, with the Rams in third.

To clinch the NFC West, Seattle must win against the Panthers, relying on a minor miracle—namely, a 49ers loss or tie against the Chicago Bears, along with a Rams loss or tie to the Atlanta Falcons.

Interestingly, even if they tie with Carolina, they could still secure the division if both the 49ers and Rams stumble in their games.

When it comes to the NFC’s top seed, the path is even trickier for Seattle. They need to defeat the Panthers, hope the Rams lose to the Falcons, and then have the 49ers tie with the Bears on Sunday night.

So why does a tie between the 49ers and Bears matter? Well, it’s all about keeping the competition tight. If the 49ers lose to the Bears, that opens the door for Chicago to take the No. 1 seed. But if there’s a tie, then neither Chicago nor San Francisco can catch Seattle.

Carolina Panthers playoff implications

On the flip side, the Panthers are leading the NFC South with an 8-7 record, just ahead of the 7-8 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. These teams are set to face off again in Week 18 (with Carolina winning the prior matchup), yet the Panthers could clinch their division this weekend.

For Carolina to secure the division this week, they need to beat the Seahawks and hope the Buccaneers lose or tie in their game against the Miami Dolphins.

Alternatively, if the game with the Seahawks ends in a tie, they still need Tampa Bay to lose to the Dolphins to claim the division.

If none of this works out, the division battle will carry over into Week 18, ultimately culminating in what’s set to be an exciting regular-season finale.

Notably, since these teams are not tied, no tiebreaker scenarios apply between them.

Here’s how the NFC standings looked before Sunday’s games:

Here’s a look at the NFC South standings.

  1. Carolina Panthers (8-7)
  2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-8)
  3. Atlanta Falcons (6-9) – e
  4. New Orleans Saints (5-10) – e

As for the NFC West standings leading into Week 17:

  1. Seattle Seahawks (12-3) – ×
  2. San Francisco 49ers (11-4) – ×
  3. Los Angeles Rams (11-4) – ×
  4. Arizona Cardinals (3-12) – e

The 49ers indeed have the tiebreaker advantage over the Rams, thanks to a superior record in divisional match-ups. San Francisco stands at 4-1 in those games, while Seattle has yet to play in Week 18, and the Rams are checking in at 3-2. The season series between these teams ended in a split.
