The Islanders chose not to reprimand Matt Barzal for his actions against Mason Marchment during their recent loss to the Blue Jackets. Surprisingly, the team rallied in support of Barzal, who took the place of rookie Matthew Schaefer after the 4-2 defeat. A roughing penalty was awarded to Marchment for a late hit on Schaefer in the first period, which led to Barzal’s reaction.
“I think he’s upset. It felt like a dirty play on Scherf,” said Adam Pelech. “Of course we’re all behind Virgie.”
It’s possible Barzal may face further penalties beyond the game misconduct he already received. This could mean a fine or even a suspension.
In that scenario, the Islanders would accept it without any complaints.
“I thought Scherf got him with a knee,” Coach Patrick Roy commented. “I never blame my teammates for protecting each other.”
In recent weeks, opponents have stopped going easy on the 18-year-old Schaefer, but the Islanders have maintained a consistent approach this season. They’re actively trying to safeguard their top draft pick.
“Shef’s just Shef. You’ve got to stand up for him,” Kyle MacLean remarked. “He’s young and really talented. There’s a right way to handle it, but it’s good to see Birdsey step up. We put him back there, so I think we can handle this penalty.”
Schaefer had kind words for Barzal. “He’s a fantastic guy, a great leader both on and off the ice. I really appreciate what he does—he’s just looking out for me like everyone else.”
Cal Ritchie was a healthy scratch for the first time this season, while Anthony Duclair returned to the lineup.
David Rittich started as goalie for the second consecutive game, making 30 saves out of 33 shots.
Roy mentioned that Ilya Sorokin is expected to skate on Monday for his lower body injury, although he has “no clue” about Sorokin’s status for the upcoming match against the Blackhawks.
In other news, the Islanders waived defenseman Ethan Baer, who has been on injured reserve since September. This move suggests that Baer’s return might be forthcoming, and he could be assigned to AHL Bridgeport if circumstances allow.
