Minnesota is dealing with a possible $9 billion fraud issue under Governor Tim Walz.

As some states like Florida and Texas flourish, two traditionally Democratic states, Minnesota and California, are currently facing significant fraud scandals. It’s worth pondering—why is this happening?

In Minnesota, an astonishing $9 billion in fraudulent activity has come to light, largely linked to the rapidly expanding Somali community. This has occurred while local media seems to have been largely disengaged.

This situation unfolded under the watch of Tim Walz, the Democratic governor of Minnesota. His approach to leadership, well, let’s say it hasn’t been particularly effective.

A lot of the scams revolve around social service programs—like daycare services or medical transportation—but the reality is there often aren’t any children or vehicles involved. Instead, what we see are schemes that wind up costing taxpayers tens or hundreds of millions of dollars.

Now, moving to California, the situation isn’t much better. A recent audit suggests that up to $72 billion could have been misappropriated from taxpayers, as noted by Governor Gavin Newsom’s own auditor.

Again, social services appear to be central to these fraud allegations, with lapses in food assistance disbursement potentially costing the state $2.5 billion in federal funds. There’s also a bullet train project with so much financial waste that federal funding is being withdrawn.

Some Democrats in California are now expressing concerns. Rep. Ro Khanna highlighted how the scale of fraud, estimated at $72 billion, is shocking. He pointed out the various financial mismanagements in infrastructure and pandemic-related services. There’s a call for new leadership to address the mess in Sacramento.

This raises a big question: why do these blue states grapple with fraud while red states like Florida and Texas seem to thrive? Even West Virginia, a deep red state, has improved its credit ratings recently.

One potential reason could simply be the amount of money in play. California, home to around 39 million residents, has a state budget of $298 billion, while Florida, with its 23 million people, operates on a budget of $116 billion.

In terms of spending, California allocates about $7,600 per resident, compared to Florida’s $5,000. It’s clear that some of this difference can be traced back to fraudulent activities in California.

Moreover, these states aren’t taking steps to enhance oversight as they continue to introduce absurd social support initiatives. This includes programs that pay individuals to be home health aides, meaning there’s often little scrutiny over taxpayer funds.

Additionally, nearly every blue state includes budget earmarks for diversity and inclusion funds in various spending bills, which might lead one to question if this practice amounts to wasteful spending. Is allocating millions for anti-racist initiatives truly justified, especially when looking at overall governance?

The enormity of fraud in these blue states might not just be a coincidence; maybe it’s why it took so long for these issues to come to light.

Reflecting on historical precedent, a book notes that a past political leader in Philadelphia believed the media would struggle to cover multiple corruption scandals happening at once. Perhaps this “breakneck speed” tactic feels relevant today.

But many people, particularly in Minnesota and California, are becoming more vocal and are not inclined to give up. This begs the questions—will voters in these states lean towards Republican options? Will responsible leaders from the Democratic side emerge? Or will there be ongoing shifts in political allegiance? It’s hard to say.

What’s clear is that as long as there remains a stark contrast between red and blue states, the populations of places like Florida and Texas are likely to keep growing, simply because it seems Americans generally appreciate effective governance.
