ICE Agents Target Minnesota Fraud Scheme
On Monday, ICE agents focused their efforts on a Minnesota location believed to be part of a significant fraud operation estimated to be worth billions. This initiative aims to uncover potential illegal immigrants involved in the scandal.
“DHS is actively conducting door-to-door visits in Minneapolis to investigate suspected fraud locations,” the Department of Homeland Security shared on X, alongside a video of officers entering Nicorette Tobacco and Vape in Burnsville, roughly 27 miles from downtown Minneapolis.
“The American public deserves clarity on how taxpayer funds are utilized, and those found abusing the system should face consequences,” an official stated.
Authorities are looking into allegations of up to $9 billion possibly misappropriated in a widespread social welfare fraud scheme, primarily linked to members of the Somali community in the area.
In one video, two immigration officers entered the Burnsville store, questioning a woman at the counter about a nearby building that seemed abandoned, asking if she had observed any activity there recently.
The employee replied that he hadn’t worked the previous day and didn’t have any information to provide. In a separate video shared by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, the same agents questioned an unidentified man outside the store regarding his subcontractors.
“Do you collaborate with any subcontractors or partner businesses for services, transportation, etc.?” one agent inquired.
The man’s response was unclear in the video.
“Homeland Security Investigations is on the ground in Minneapolis carrying out a substantial investigation into child care and other widespread fraud,” Noem mentioned in her X post accompanying the footage.
A number of individuals, many from the Somali immigrant community, have already been arrested in connection with this scheme. It involves the establishment of newly formed businesses and nonprofits that claim to provide essential services like housing, food, and medical assistance while billing government-funded state programs for non-existent services.
