In 2025, many notable incidents highlighted how Americans used their right to bear arms for personal protection. By December 23, the U.S. recorded 14,249 gun-related fatalities and 25,606 injuries, as reported by the Gun Violence Archive. Out of these incidents, there were 1,119 cases deemed self-defense, with many not pursued legally due to state laws permitting firearm use in life-threatening scenarios.

Church security guards stop armed Michigan man before shooting begins
In June, security personnel at a church thwarted a Michigan man from potentially opening fire on a large congregation during a Sunday service. Brian Browning, 31, entered Crosspoint Community Church equipped with an AR-15-style rifle and 500 rounds of ammunition on June 22. Witnesses recounted how he arrived in a tactical vest and camouflage, firing shots near the entrance.
In the ensuing panic, some congregation members attempted to run Browning over with a pickup truck, inadvertently injuring a member of the security team. Ultimately, security guard Jay Tromblay fatally shot Browning, likely averting a massacre.
Tromblay later expressed mixed feelings about the incident, reflecting on Browning’s humanity given their shared experiences of parenthood. Investigators found that Browning struggled with mental health issues and expressed extremist beliefs on social media.
