U.S. Forces Target ISIS in Ongoing Operations
According to U.S. Central Command, around 25 key ISIS figures have been killed or captured by U.S. and allied forces since an attack in Syria on December 19.
The operations were part of what they call Operation Hawkeye, which began that same day. U.S. and Jordanian forces reportedly struck over 70 sites using more than 100 precision munitions. This extensive operation involved numerous fighter jets, helicopters, and artillery, aiming to dismantle ISIS’s infrastructure throughout central Syria.
Additionally, CENTCOM reported that U.S. and Syrian partner forces have detained over 300 terrorists and conducted missions resulting in more than 20 deaths in the last year. They also mentioned that there have been at least 11 attacks or plots against U.S. targets inspired by ISIS this year.
CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper emphasized their commitment to combat terrorism. He stated, “We will not relent,” reinforcing their ongoing collaboration with regional allies to tackle the ISIS threat, which is perceived as a vital concern for both national and regional security.
The context surrounding these operations became grim earlier this month when two Iowa Army National Guard members and a civilian interpreter lost their lives in Syria. They were identified as Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres Tovar, 25, and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, alongside civilian interpreter Ayad Mansour Sakat, 54.
As the U.S. continues efforts against ISIS, hopes remain that reducing their influence will bring about greater safety for allies and citizens alike.
