Allegations Surrounding Minnesota Childcare Fraud
YouTuber Nick Shirley recently discussed the issue of childcare fraud on “Trigger with Don Jr.” Host Donald Trump Jr. mentioned that he urged the Trump administration to consider criminal prosecution against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and others if they played a role in what’s being termed the Somali scam.
On Friday, Shirley shared a video that went viral, revealing that his children were missing from several childcare centers in Minnesota allegedly operated by Somalis. One of these centers purportedly received around $4 million from taxpayers. He emphasized that this fraud scandal needs to be taken seriously, marking what he called a “pivotal moment” for the administration.
Shirley stated, “I think the accountability we want here is seeing those responsible face legal consequences. If you steal $10 million, you’re going to prison. If I were to steal that amount, I’d expect the same. So, if Tim Walz is implicated in this, even if it’s just $1 million, he ought to face the music—whether that means ten days in isolation or something more long-term, depending on what a judge decides.” He further argued that this is a moment for the administration to decisively hold people accountable.
Shirley also claimed that Walz had been aware of the fraud for some time and asserted that pursuing action against the governors could instigate substantial changes.
State officials have accused Walz of “organized retaliation” in relation to the fraud allegations, which were brought to light by whistleblowers while federal prosecutors are exploring various cases.
“Tim Walz is 100% accountable for the large-scale fraud occurring in Minnesota,” they noted. “We had alerted him about the fraud early on and hoped for cooperation, but instead, we encountered the opposite.” In a later appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Walz remarked that Minnesota has become “a magnet for criminals.”
He added, “It’s not solely a Somali issue. Minnesota is indeed a generous and prosperous state, which attracts illicit actors. Our bond rating is AAA, but that allure can be a double-edged sword.” Meanwhile, Walz’s office defended his record, claiming he has taken strides to combat fraud and has sought more legislative power to act decisively. They highlighted increased surveillance and initiatives to investigate specific facilities, one of which has already been shut down.
In response to Shirley’s video, Minnesota’s Secretary of Children, Youth and Families, Tikki Brown, stated that investigations are ongoing, but none have confirmed allegations of fraud thus far. Additionally, FBI Director Kash Patel expressed that the bureau has enhanced its resources in relation to the Minnesota fraud case, revealing a dismantling of a $250 million scheme that exploited federal food aid intended for vulnerable children during the pandemic. He indicated that this is merely the beginning of a much larger problem.
According to First Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson, the alleged fraud in Minnesota’s Medicaid program might surpass $9 billion. Shirley, in a recent viral post, claimed his team identified over $110 million in fraudulent activities in just one day.
Disturbingly, resurfaced surveillance footage from 2018 demonstrates Somali scammers purportedly extorting funds from Minnesota under false pretenses for services they did not provide. The footage, recorded in 2015, reportedly shows parents dropping off their children at daycare and leaving shortly after.
